JIU-JITSU BLACK BELT FEDERATION OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

The Jiu Jitsu Black Belt Federation of the United States of America (JJBBF) is the governing body for the Minna Jiu Jitsu Ryu (School), the various chartered schools, ranking and testing requirements for students and is organized to maintain the integrity of the art.

Membership in the JJBBF is by invitation only and offered to those who have achieved the rank of Sho Dan (Black Belt, 1st Degree - see ranks).  The JJBBF also conducts the testing of black belts.

Founded in 1950 by Frank F. Kovacs, Head Instructor of the Cleveland School of Self Defense and Judo.  In the second part of 1950s a few black belts trained at he Cleveland School of Self Defense and Judo wished to open their own schools providing the impetus for the founding of the Federation.  The JJBBF was, if not the very first, one of the very first Self Defense or Jiu Jitsu association in the United States.

People throughout the United States were studying Karate, Kempo and other martial arts but few if any schools were teaching Jiu Jitsu and Self Defense.  The JJBBF provided the springboard for the opening of dozens of school specializing in the Minna Jiu Jitsu martial arts style.  Schools opened from Cleveland to California to New York City and in multiple other locations; all having their origination and initial training at the Cleveland Hombu Dojo.  The Cleveland Hombu Dojo and the Jiu Jitsu Black Belt Federation of the United States of America were featured in dozens of television specials and in many, many magazine and newspaper articles.

Grandmaster Kovacs is very pleased and proud that the Minna Jiu Jitsu style and the JJBBF have thrived and that so many men, women and children have, through the study and discipline of Minna Jiu Jitu and the martial arts, enriched their physical and psychological development and well-being.  The enrichment of the lives of thousands of students is, more than any certificate, awards or any other recognition, his greatest satisfaction

All participants must agree to the Mission and Guidelines of Minna Jiu Jitsu and of the Dojo.
